Mapping the nanoscale architecture of functional materials
Researchers at PSI and ETH Zurich have pioneered a new X-ray-technique, which probes the orientation of a material’s building blocks at the nanoscale in three-dimensions. First applied to study a polycrystalline catalyst, the technique allows the visualisation of crystal grains, grain boundaries and defects - key factors determining catalyst performance.
Soldering wounds with light and nano thermometers
Not every wound can be closed with needle and thread. Researchers at ETH Zurich and Empa researchers have now developed a soldering process with nanoparticles that gently fuses tissue.
If paradise were made of concrete
D-?BAUG materials scientist Franco Zunino wants to revolutionise concrete using the right mix of the versatile material to radically reduce CO2 emissions.
Novel computer components inspired by brain cells
Researchers at ETH Zurich, Empa and the Politecnico di Milano are developing a new type of computer component that is more powerful and easier to manufacture than its predecessors. Inspired by the human brain, it is designed to process large amounts of data fast and in an energy-efficient way.
