Retrospective on the "smart moves" awareness campaign

Between March and October 2023, the many initiatives and measures implemented as part of the "smart moves" awareness campaign shone a light on how we can do even more with regard to sustainability here at ETH Zurich.

Under the leadership of the 澳门美高梅金殿 Services department, and in close partnership with ETH Sustainability, the awareness campaign covered a wide range of topics and spanned several months. This enabled us to make the subject of sustainable mobility visible and tangible for all of the relevant target groups throughout ETH Zurich. The "smart moves": "sustainably towards net zero" website was the central point of reference on the subject, and provided ongoing information on the various different initiatives.

Bike exchanges, bike sharing and panel discussion

The second Bike Sharing Showcase and second bike exchange of the year were held on 12 October 2023, in beautiful autumnal weather on the H?nggerberg campus. These two events marked the end of the active part of the campaign.

"smart moves" was launched back in March 2023 with the first ETH bike exchange on the Polyterrasse. The two bike exchanges were attended by more than 800 people, and new owners were found for 210 bikes.

Multiple tours on the subject of "the journey to net zero", the Bike to Work Challenge and the Academic Bicycle Challenge then took place throughout the summer, alongside other activities.

In early October, experts discussed potential solutions for more sustainable mobility in a public panel discussion entitled "Driving Towards Zero Emissions – The Future of Sustainable Mobility". The panel included Thomas Gereke, Senior Consultant e-Mobility at Siemens, Saverio Akbas, Product Owner Swiss Climate Challenge App at Swisscom, and Clarissa Livingston P.E., Project Coordinator for the E-Bike City project.

Spotlight on analogue and digital mobility facilities

The project team provided much-needed information with a redesigned, fold-up, A6 "smart moves" Mobility Guide poster. The Mobility Guide provides information on what mobility facilities are offered at ETH, and where they can be found on the campus. It also contains details of the following mobility facilities:

  • Bike sharing
  • Car sharing
  • Car rental
  • Public transport stops
  • Parking spaces
  • Electric bike charging stations
  • Bike pumps
  • Bike workshop

The Mobility Guide was distributed to over 6,000 freshers (among others) at the start of the semester and can also be picked up for free from 澳门美高梅金殿 Info.

A "Mobility" menu option has also been added to the ETH app. This means that the many different mobility facilities offered at ETH can now be viewed and selected using the digital 澳门美高梅金殿 Map in the ETH app.

2024 – the year of the circular economy

"smart moves" was launched in response to the federal government's external page Exemplary Energy and Climate initiative, which runs until 2030. Against the backdrop of this initiative, ETH Zurich has committed itself to raising awareness of the subjects of energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate-friendly activity every year within its community. Next year's awareness campaign will deal with the responsible use of resources throughout ETH under the working title of "The circular economy".
